Sustainability Statements

A sustainability statement will accompany the planning application and brings together all of the features of the development which contribute to the sustainability and low carbon agenda. If the Local Planning Authority uses a Sustainability Checklist, then the statement can also show how the development meets those requirements.

A sustainability statement is more than an energy statement, as will include a whole range of issues as directed by the planning authority and typically will cover aspects such as:

  • Sustainable building and materials
  • Energy and carbon saving
  • Waste
  • Water use
  • Ecology
  • Transport
  • Community development
  • Surface water run off and flooding
  • Design features
  • Access to local services and shops
  • Open spaces

Often the sustainability statement will include the Code for Sustainable Homes pre-assessment, which will be part of the overall sustainability strategy.
