Ashley Vale Action Group Apartments, Bristol Winner of the Regen South West Green Energy Award for "Best Housing Scheme" for 2009. This project has carried out a highly sustainable conversion of this derelict 1950’s concrete office building to six 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. 120 mm or external insulation with high performance windows and a complete new timber framed top floor have transformed the original solid wall offices. 24 square metres of solar thermal combined with a communal wood pellet heating system have added to the overall performance and reduced carbon emissions. Brilliant Futures working with architects Bruges Tozer have provided the energy modelling, feasibility reports and sustainable construction advice which then helped develop the final designs construction methods and energy system choices.
Before Conversion What the client says: "We commissioned Brilliant Futures to look at our proposals and to determine what work was required. Their initial works centred on heat demand and loss calculations which were presented quickly and understandably by them to our lay committee. The report by Brilliant Futures was key to decision making and progression of the final scheme. Once extensive materials research and costing had been done they assisted us in concluding the final affordable and deliverable option. It is quite clear that the experience and technical input of Brilliant Futures was significant in helping us to deliver a successful refurbishment from which we hope others can learn and follow. We are confident that with the technical guidance input from Brilliant Futures energy usage will be very low. "
